When I moved to the north shore, I figured finding a barber would be the easy part of settling in. It took longer than finding a dentist.

I wasn’t asking for much, or so I thought. A high quality fade, real scissor work on top, somewhere I’d actually want to sit for half an hour. What I found instead was the Lake County barbershop tradeoff, and if you’ve been shop-hopping around here, you already know it:

The chain shops were convenient and everywhere, and the cuts just weren’t good. Fine for a trim, not for a fade you have to wear for three weeks.

The shops with real fade skill existed, but they weren’t in neighborhoods where I wanted to spend my Saturday.

The one boutique spot that was actually decent opened when they felt like it and charged like every cut came with a valet. Good work means nothing if you can’t count on the door being unlocked.

Skill, location, and reliability. Every shop I tried made me pick two.

Then I Drove Down Milwaukee Avenue

I didn’t find The Parlor on Google. I passed it driving down Milwaukee Ave in Libertyville, in the Win-Mil plaza, and decided to just try it. Full parking lot, walked right in.

The shop was clean and welcoming. Nikko asked a few questions before he started, we talked about the area while he worked, and he gave me one of the best fades I’d ever gotten. No drama, no performance. Just a barber who clearly knew what he was doing.

Here’s the part I’ll admit: I didn’t trust it yet. One great cut can be a fluke. So the second visit was a test. Would the cut hold up? Would the vibe still be good when I wasn’t a new face? It did, and it was. I’ve been going ever since.

What Actually Makes the Cut Different

I’ve had fades from a lot of barbers, so let me be specific about what separates Nikko’s, because “he’s great” tells you nothing.

It’s the blend. There is no visible line anywhere on my head. The fade transitions into the scissor-cut length on top with no bulky edges, no defined band where the clipper work ends and the scissor work begins. It just becomes my hair. That combination, clippers below blending invisibly into scissors above, is the hardest version of the cut, and most shops are honestly good at one or the other. He also cuts to my head shape, so the whole thing looks balanced instead of like a style stamped onto whoever sits down.

The other difference shows up during the week after. When Nikko cuts my hair, I barely have to do anything to it. It looks right when I wake up. A cut that only looks good in the shop mirror isn’t a good cut.

The Honest Math

I go every three to four weeks. Sometimes life wins and I stretch it longer than I should.

It’s not the cheapest cut in Lake County, and I’m not going to pretend it is. It’s worth it every time. The feeling after a genuinely good haircut is priceless, and I spent enough time getting mediocre ones to know the difference isn’t small.

One story that sums up the service side: I had a flight out of town and couldn’t get a slot on the booking schedule. I called to ask about cancellations, and Nikko made it happen. That’s not an app feature. That’s a barber who treats you like a regular.

My Advice If You’re Still Shop-Hopping

If you’re where I was, bouncing between shops that are just okay, here’s what I’d tell you:

Look for a shop that takes pride in every cut and can back it with quality work, then stop wasting time and go. The Parlor’s vibe is chill, no judgment, not intimidating, and with every barber on their own Booksy calendar you can find your barber and keep them. The location is easy, the parking is free and right there, and the cut is consistent, which after my boutique experience might be the most underrated word in barbering.

And don’t take one client’s word for it. The Parlor has a perfect 5.0 on Google across more than 100 reviews. Zero shops pull that off by accident.

The tradeoff I thought was mandatory, skill or location or reliability, pick two, turned out to be a choice between shops that hadn’t figured it out yet. This one has.
